OUR BEGINNINGS
The Calnen Studio was established at Stairs Place in Halifax’s North End in 1972. Robert and Barbara Calnen are both well respected in the photographic profession. Robert studied photography for five years and graduated from Brook’s Institute of Photography in California. He acquired his Master photography degrees with the Professional Photographers of Canada and of America. He has won the prestigious Canadian Photographer of the Year award along with numerous international awards.

THE CALNEN STUDIOS TODAY
After 36 years, the Calnen studio remains a community-based photographic business which is still owned and operated by the Calnen family. It has evolved into a second-generation business with their sons Jason and Jonathan. Jason Calnen apprenticed with his father for four years after spending five years in the film industry. Today he operates Light and Lens Photography in Wolfville.

Jonathan Calnen joined after obtaining a Computer Science degree from Acadia University.

With fifty years of combined photographic experience, photographer Kerry DeLorey and fine art photographer Stephen Patterson have also joined the Calnen team.

The Calnen studios are extremely diversified in all phases of detailed imaging. They offer a variety of styles and have the expertise to capture images that go well beyond the expectations of most. Their credentials, facilities and their dedication prove that they are an excellent example of true professionalism in the photographic industry.
